This Alabama hospital was named the nationâs âMost Beautifulâ
A Mobile hospital has been named the nation’s “most beautiful” in an annual ranking by Soliant, a top healthcare staffing company.
This year marked the 11th year Soliant has compiled the rankings.
Nominations are submitted by patients, staff, community members and the general public from across the U.S, with emphasis on “hospitals that integrate aesthetics and dedicated staff as elements of beauty which contribute to the health and well-being of their patients,” according to Soliant.
More than 50 hospitals were nominated for 2023.
Once the votes were counted — more than half a million of them — Mobile’s Providence Hospital emerged as the Most Beautiful Hospital in the U.S., taking in 120,086 votes — or 23.7% of all votes cast nationwide. Providence was the runaway winner, with second place Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in California garnering little more than half (62,195) of Providence’s vote total.
Providence is a 349-bed facility which employs an estimated 1,800 physicians, associates and other providers.
Here’s what Soliant had to say about Providence Hospital:
Designed in the mid-80s by noted American architect Bertrand Goldberg (best known for Chicago’s famed Marina City complex), Providence Hospital’s ‘draped structure’ concrete shell tower comes to earth independently of the base building to create an abstract and poetic interface. (This also helps the hospital to withstand earthquakes and hurricanes.) The combination of curved shapes and soaring structure create unique perspectives from ground-level views. Well integrated with its serene landscape, a small lake for storm water retention was created by damming a natural gully on the site, allowing for beautiful views from inside as well as out.
Soliant also noted 2023 was the first time Providence had been included on the list. In April, the University of South Alabama Health Care Authority announced it was acquiring Providence from Ascension for $85 million.
The acquisition became official Oct. 1, according to Providence.
In compiling the rankings, Soliant notes that what makes a beautiful hospital is subjective and can go beyond the aesthetics of the facility.
“Maybe it’s the support of top-notch staff who knows that love and laughter may be the best medicine,” according to Soliant. “It could be the hospital’s holistic focus that treats the patient’s well-being, instead of treating the common cold.”
